In Year 3, pupils move up into Westonbirt Prep. Children in Years 3 to 6 move to a larger building called Querns House. Inter-school sport becomes part of the timetable. Classes are still taught primarily by a form teacher, with specialist teachers introduced to suit the more subject-based curriculum including Art, Science, ICT and Modern Foreign Languages. This breadth of academic teaching ensures leavers of Westonbirt Prep are fully equipped for life at their chosen senior school.
Personal and social development remain a cornerstone of our school ethos.
Boys and girls are praised for their efforts and good behaviour and are encouraged to develop a sense of independence, mutual consideration, manners and respect for others.
Many of our pupils are identified as being gifted academically or talented in a particular field and provision for extra educational support is offered for all pupils who excel in a particular area, learn faster than others or have the potential to achieve results at a level significantly ahead of their year group. Pupils may have exceptional ability in an academic subject such as English, Maths or Linguistics or their talent may take a more practical form in areas like Sport, Music, Art and Drama. Leadership, decision-making and organisation skills are encouraged.
To ensure every child achieves their full potential, particular provision is available for pupils with learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and mild attention disorders and the Prep school has its own dedicated Learning Support specialist. Extra support and individually planned programmes and exercises are provided. This might take the form of weekly meetings or short booster sessions over a half term or a term. Strong working partnerships are developed with parents and all those involved in a child’s well-being, including educational psychologists and other professionals. This is paramount in enabling children to participate fully in school life alongside their peers.
At the end of Year 6 pupils are awarded the Westonbirt Diploma at our Prize Giving. This is a celebration of all they have learned and achieved across six areas of learning: Core Academic (English, Maths and Science), Humanities (History, Geography and RE), Creative Arts (DT and Art), Performing Arts (Music and Drama), Sport and Outdoor Activities and Skills for Life (First Aid, Life Saving, Cooking, Spanish, ICT). Parents can be confident that this innovative Diploma will allow children to develop and recognise their own strengths, whilst gaining practical life skills alongside the core curriculum.
Our commitment to children’s broader personal development combined with structured preparation for senior school, makes us stand out. In Years 5 and 6, children are prepared for 11+ entrance to a range of schools, including Westonbirt School and local grammar schools for boys and girls. Most pupils go on to their first choice school when they leave Westonbirt Prep, often with scholarships.
Senior school destinations include; Westonbirt School, Kingswood School, Pate’s Grammar, Wycliffe, Dean Close and Stroud High School.
